One of the quietest corners of the Great Barrier Reef starts a lot closer than most people realise — about 1.9 km from a central Gladstone studio. Here's how the gateway works.

It all begins at the Marina

The Gladstone Marina is the departure point for boats and transfers heading out to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, including Heron Island. From a central base it's roughly a five-minute drive, which makes an early departure painless — no long pre-dawn transfer before the transfer.

Heron Island sits on the Southern Reef — coral cay, turtles and famously quiet water.

Why the Southern Reef

The southern end of the reef is known for being less crowded than the far-north hotspots — coral cays, snorkelling straight off the beach, nesting turtles in season and birdlife that's hard to believe. Heron in particular is a small, protected island where the reef is the whole point.

The reef, without the queue — and it starts at the end of your street.

Plan the practical bits

  • Book island transfers and stays well ahead — capacity is limited and seasonal.
  • Check current departure schedules and conditions directly with operators at the Marina.
  • Give yourself a buffer the night before — a central studio means a short, calm run to the dock.
